Reviews
The Distinguished Gentleman received mixed to negative reviews from critics upon its release. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a low approval rating of 13%, indicating that many critics found it lacking in terms of effective satire and sharpness. The consensus points to a failure in delivering incisive political commentary, instead resorting to broad comedy and predictable plot devices. However, some appreciated Eddie Murphy's charismatic performance, which adds energy to the film despite its shortcomings. IMDb users have given it a moderate score of 5.9/10, reflecting an average viewer experience, with some enjoying the lighthearted approach while others found it underwhelming compared to Murphy's other works. Metacritic assigns it a score of 45/100, indicating mixed or average reviews. For example, critics noted that although the film raises relevant political issues, it falters in fully exploiting its premise, often settling for slapstick humor over sharp wit. The pacing and narrative were also points of critique, with some reviews highlighting a lack of depth and cohesion. In summary, The Distinguished Gentleman offers a blend of comedy and political satire that some viewers may find amusing, but it generally falls short of being a compelling or insightful political comedy.
