Synopsis

Set in the late 1970s, X follows a group of filmmakers who travel to rural Texas to shoot an adult film. Under the oppressive heat and isolation of their chosen location, the crew, led by aspiring actress Maxine (Mia Goth), confronts the stark realities of ambition and the personal sacrifices required to achieve their dreams. Surrounded by aged locals and an eerie ambiance, they soon discover that their film project has alarming consequences as the line between artistic expression and moral decay becomes painfully blurred. What begins as a seemingly innocent pursuit of fame devolves into a nightmare where they fight for their lives against dark, unforeseen forces. As tensions rise, the film critiques societal views on sexuality, aging, and the complexities of the human psyche, all while delivering shocking horror sequences that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Reviews

Critics have had much to say about X, with many praising its originality and execution. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts an impressive approval rating of 94%, with some reviewers highlighting it as one of the best horror films of the year. The blend of slasher elements with a critique of the adult film industry drew commendation for its depth. For instance, a critic from 'Variety' noted, 'It combines stylistic flair with social commentary, making it as reflective as it is terrifying.' Looking at IMDb, the film holds a score of 6.5/10, with fans appreciating its nostalgic homage to the horror genre while also pushing boundaries. Meanwhile, Metacritic awarded it a score of 79/100, indicating generally favorable reviews. A review from 'The Guardian' commented on Mia Goth's standout performance, stating, 'Her dual role is hauntingly powerful, bringing an emotional layer to the genre that is often missing.' However, some critics found fault in pacing, suggesting that certain moments dragged and diminished the urgency of the horror. Overall, 'X' has successfully sparked dialogues around its themes while serving up thrills that horror fans crave.
