Reviews
Ruby Gentry has received mixed reviews from critics since its release. While some praise the film's atmospheric cinematography and Jennifer Jones' compelling performance, others find fault in its melodramatic plot and stereotypical portrayal of Southern characters. The New York Times described the film as 'a lurid melodrama that offers more picturesque shots of python-haunted swamps than it does of good acting'. However, Variety commended Jones for her 'undeniable screen presence' and the film's lush Technicolor visuals. Rotten Tomatoes gives Ruby Gentry a rating of 63%, indicating a lukewarm reception among modern audiences. Despite its flaws, the film remains a classic example of 1950s romantic melodrama.
