Synopsis

Disco is a 2008 French comedy film directed by Fabien Onteniente, starring Franck Dubosc as Didier Graindorge, also known as 'Didier Travolta.' The film follows the story of Didier, a genial, middle-aged man who once had dreams of becoming a disco star. Unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, Didier faces the prospect of losing custody of his son as he can't afford to pay for a holiday trip. Determined to turn his luck around, and with a glimmer of hope, he decides to rekindle his passion for disco dancing. With the help of his old friends and a former dance instructor, Didier sets out to win a local dance contest in the hopes of securing enough money to take his son on the promised holiday. Along the way, Didier rediscovers his self-worth, confidence, and the joy of dancing.

Reviews

Disco has drawn a range of reactions from critics, resulting in a largely mixed reception. On IMDb, the movie holds an average user rating of 4.4/10. According to Rotten Tomatoes, where the audience score isn't much higher, the film is critiqued for its predictable plot and clichéd characters. Critic Lisa Nesselson of Variety highlighted the film's 'nostalgic charm' but also noted that it 'fails to elevate itself above standard comedic fare.' The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw pointed out that 'while Franck Dubosc brings his usual charm to the role, the material doesn't quite match up to his talents,' rating the movie 2 out of 5 stars. Metacritic aggregates a generally unfavorable consensus, emphasizing that while the film's light-heartedness can be endearing, it often struggles with pacing issues and an over-reliance on disco-era clichés. Despite these criticisms, some viewers may find Disco's nostalgic look back at the disco era and its upbeat soundtrack to be a fun, albeit simple, pastime.
