Synopsis

Detective Jan Klaassen (Cees Geel) returns for a brain-teasing adventure alongside his inquisitive son Stijn. A puzzling crime spree strikes three prominent Dutch landmarks, each theft accompanied by a cryptic trio of clues tied to a centuries-old enigma known as the “Law of Three.” As father and son race through Amsterdam’s winding streets and beyond, they must rely on Jan’s seasoned detective instincts and Stijn’s youthful ingenuity to stay one step ahead of a shadowy mastermind. Balancing light-hearted humor with family-friendly suspense, the film underscores the bond between protective parent and curious child without resorting to graphic violence. With brisk pacing, playful banter and just enough twists to keep younger viewers engaged, Mijn Vader is een Detective: De Wet van 3 delivers an accessible mystery that celebrates teamwork, trust and the timeless appeal of an old-school detective tale.

Reviews

On IMDb, Mijn Vader is een Detective: De Wet van 3 holds a 5.6/10 rating based on over 1,200 user votes, reflecting a mixed but generally middling audience response. One IMDb user praised, “Cees Geel’s performance as the doting but determined father kept the film lively, and the playful father-son banter is genuinely amusing” (user rating: 7/10). Conversely, another commented, “The puzzles and set pieces are serviceable for younger viewers, but adult audiences may find the storyline too straightforward” (user rating: 4/10).

The film does not appear on Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic, highlighting its limited international exposure. Dutch review site FilmTotaal awarded it 3 out of 5 stars, noting, “De Wet van 3 delivers light entertainment and Cees Geel’s trademark charisma, even if the mystery feels familiar and underdeveloped.” On Moviemeter, it scored 6.1/10, with users echoing that “the sequel captures the sense of adventure from the original but doesn’t reinvent the wheel.”

Critics generally agree that while the movie may not break new ground in detective storytelling, it succeeds as a wholesome family caper. Its strengths lie in the chemistry between lead performers and its gentle humor; its weaknesses stem from a simplistic plot structure and modest production scale. Cinenews.nl parents’ reviews commended the film’s safe approach to suspense—“My kids were engaged throughout, and I couldn’t complain about any graphic content” (user rating: 4/5)—but some lamented the lack of deeper supporting roles. Overall, its Golden Film nomination in the Netherlands reflects solid box-office performance, making it a serviceable pick for fans of light mysteries and father-son dynamics.
