Synopsis
The First Men in the Moon (2010) is a British science fiction television film adaptation of H.G. Wells's classic novel, directed by Damon Thomas. Starring Rory Kinnear as the determined scientist Cavor, the story follows an ambitious expedition to the Moon during the height of early 20th-century space exploration dreams. Cavor invents a gravity-defying substance called Cavorite, which powers their spacecraft to the lunar surface. Alongside businessman Mr. Bedford, they discover an alien civilization beneath the Moonโs surface, leading to a blend of wonder, scientific curiosity, and cultural clashes. The film balances themes of adventure, discovery, and the consequences of human ambition with imaginative set design and early sci-fi charm.

Reviews
Critics have given The First Men in the Moon mixed reviews, acknowledging its ambitious adaptation of H.G. Wellsโs novel but noting limitations in execution. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.1/10, indicating a moderately positive but not outstanding reception. Viewers appreciate Rory Kinnear's performance, with his portrayal of Cavor being praised for bringing depth and nuance to the role. Some reviews commend the filmโs inventive production design, capturing the early 1900s aesthetic alongside imaginative lunar landscapes, which contributes to the nostalgic sci-fi atmosphere. However, several critics faulted the pacing and uneven tone, feeling the narrative sometimes struggles to fully engage outside of its conceptual intrigue. According to audience feedback on Rotten Tomatoes, which does not aggregate critic scores for this TV film, opinions range from enthusiastic delight in the faithful adaptation to disappointment with the limited special effects and storytelling depth compared to contemporary sci-fi standards. Metacritic does not list a score, reflecting the filmโs more niche viewership and TV distribution rather than wide theatrical release. Overall, The First Men in the Moon appeals mainly to fans of classic science fiction and early 20th-century literature but may feel slow or dated for those expecting modern sci-fi thrills.
