Reviews
Pete's Dragon (1977) has garnered a mixed reception over the years. Rotten Tomatoes reflects a 56% approval rating, indicating a divided response from critics. One such review from the Los Angeles Times praised the film's 'wholesome charm and delightful animation,' highlighting the strong vocal performances and catchy musical numbers. On the other hand, the New York Times criticized it for its 'saccharine' plotline and 'uneven pacing,' which may not hold the attention of older viewers. The film holds an IMDb rating of 6.3/10, pointing towards a more favorable reception from general audiences, who have appreciated its nostalgic value and endearing characters. However, Metacriticโs score of 46 out of 100 suggests a significant variance of opinion among critics. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times described it as 'a sweet and engaging family film with moments of genuine enchantment,' but noted the potential over-reliance on sentimentalism. Overall, Pete's Dragon remains a beloved classic for some, while others find its charm less enduring.
