Reviews

Critics have given Backlash a mixed but generally positive reception. According to IMDb, the film has a rating of 6.6/10, reflecting an appreciation for its storytelling and performances. The New York Times noted, "Richard Widmark brings his usual intensity to the role of Jim Slater, effectively portraying his character's vengeful spirit." This sentiment is echoed by user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, where audiences have praised the filmmaking, despite some pointing out a predictable plot. One review states, "Though the story might tread familiar ground, the stunning cinematography and Widmark's magnetic presence elevate the film beyond its conventional storyline." However, some critics mentioned pacing issues, with a review on Metacritic hinting at a 'sluggish' middle act, yet concluding that "the climactic moments redeem its slower sections." While not universally acclaimed, 'Backlash' has carved a niche for itself among fans of classic westerns, remaining a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate the genre's traditional themes of justice and retribution.
