Synopsis

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back (2017) is an adventurous fantasy film directed by Tsui Hark and produced by Stephen Chow. Serving as a sequel to the 2013 hit Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, the movie follows the monk Tang Sanzang and his disciples—comprising Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Sha Wujing, and the pig demon Zhu Bajie—as they continue their perilous journey to retrieve sacred scriptures. When a new demon threat arises, the group must face formidable challenges and internal conflicts, testing their courage, loyalty, and faith. Featuring a vibrant blend of action, humor, and special effects, the film combines traditional Chinese myth with modern cinematic style, with a notable performance by Kris Wu as an intriguing new character in their epic quest.

Reviews

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 64% approval rating, with critics praising its visual spectacle and energetic action sequences, but some criticizing its uneven tone. The consensus highlights that while it captures some of the charm of the original, it falls short of delivering a fully satisfying narrative experience. Metacritic’s score stands at 59/100, reflecting mixed or average reviews. Various critiques commend the movie’s imaginative special effects and the chemistry among the cast but note the storyline sometimes feels disjointed and lacks depth. IMDb users rated the movie 5.4/10, indicating lukewarm audience reception. Some reviewers appreciated Kris Wu’s charismatic performance and the film’s humorous moments, while others felt it struggled to balance comedy and drama effectively. Overall, while visually engaging and entertaining for fans of fantasy action, it may not fully resonate with those seeking a coherent or emotionally compelling story.
