Synopsis

Kickin' It Old Skool is a 2007 comedy film starring Jamie Kennedy as Justin, a former breakdancer who wakes up from a 20-year coma and tries to reclaim his place in the world and reconnect with the culture he left behind. As Justin struggles to fit into modern society, he reunites with his old dance crew to compete in a breakdancing competition that reignites his passion for dancing and friendship. The film combines slapstick humor, nostalgia for 1980s breakdance culture, and a fish-out-of-water storyline as Justin discovers the challenges and laughs that come with adjusting to the new millennium.

Reviews

Kickin' It Old Skool was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a very low score, reflecting widespread critical disapproval. Metacritic assigned the film a dismal score of 18 out of 100, indicating 'overwhelming dislike.' IMDb users gave it a 4.6/10 rating, which suggests a below-average reception. Critics panned the film for its weak script, outdated humor, and reliance on juvenile gags that failed to resonate with modern viewers. The performances, including Jamie Kennedy's lead role, were often described as uninspired, with some reviews noting that the attempts at nostalgia felt forced and shallow. Despite the poor critical reception, a small segment of viewers appreciated the film's lightheartedness and campy charm, seeing it as a cheesy but fun throwback to 1980s breakdance culture. However, mainstream critics generally agreed that Kickin' It Old Skool failed to deliver effective comedy or meaningful storytelling, marking it as a low point in early 2000s comedy films.
