Synopsis
Silence (沈黙 SILENCE) is a 1971 film directed by Masahiro Shinoda, based on the novel of the same name by Shusaku Endo. The story follows two Jesuit missionaries, Father Rodrigues and Father Garupe, who travel to Japan in the 17th century to locate their missing mentor, Father Ferreira, amid the harsh persecution of Christians. As they face oppression and witness the struggles of the local Christian community, the missionaries grapple with the concept of faith and the silence of God in the face of suffering. The film explores themes of religious faith, cultural clashes, and moral dilemmas in a visually striking and introspective manner.
