Reviews
Under the Mountain holds a respectable place in cult television history, especially cherished by fans of classic New Zealand productions. It has an IMDb rating of 8.0/10, indicating strong viewer appreciation. Critics have often praised the show for its atmospheric storytelling and faithful adaptation of Maurice Gee's novel. The Guardian described it as "a charming example of early 80s fantasy TV that balances suspense and heart." Some reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes noted the series' effective use of practical effects and engaging plot as highlights that contributed to its timeless appeal. However, it has also been mentioned that the pacing and special effects feel dated when viewed by modern standards, which might not satisfy all contemporary audiences. Metacritic scores are not available for the series, reflecting its niche cultural status. Overall, Under the Mountain is celebrated for its imaginative narrative and early exploration of supernatural themes on television, making it a memorable classic for fans of the genre and era.
