Synopsis

Baghead is a 2008 indie comedy-horror film directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, starring Steve Zissis, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The story follows four struggling actors who retreat to a secluded cabin, hoping to write and produce a low-budget film. Their retreat takes an eerie turn when a mysterious figure wearing a bag over their head begins to stalk them. Blending elements of horror with sharp character-driven humor, Baghead explores themes of artistic ambition, friendship, and the blurry line between reality and fiction. With its minimalist style and dark humor, the film offers a fresh take on the found-footage and slasher genres.

Reviews

Critically, Baghead received a positive response for its unique approach and clever writing. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 79% approval rating, with critics praising its smart blend of comedy and horror; the consensus highlights the film's witty dialogue and effective tension. Metacritic rates it 62 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews, with particular commendation for its fresh narrative style and naturalistic performances, especially from Steve Zissis. IMDb ratings average at 6.0/10, reflecting a moderate audience reception. Many reviewers appreciate the movie's low-budget creativity and the Duplass brothers' ability to cultivate suspense through character interactions rather than gore. However, some viewers found the pacing slow and the plot intentionally ambiguous, which may not appeal to all. Overall, Baghead is regarded as an inventive indie film that effectively balances humor and horror while spotlighting the struggles of aspiring artists.
