Synopsis

Cheer Up, Mr. Lee follows the heartwarming story of Cheol-soo (Cha Seung-won), a simple-minded but good-hearted man who lives a quiet life working odd jobs. His world turns upside down when he finds out he has a daughter, Saet-byeol, who he never knew about due to an error in his family registry. Saet-byeol has a serious illness and longs to meet her father. The film chronicles Cheol-soo’s journey as he embarks on an unexpected adventure of fatherhood to make Saet-byeol's wish come true, discovering love and responsibility along the way. This poignant yet humorous drama beautifully captures the essence of familial bonds, human kindness, and the strength found in the most unlikely of heroes.

Reviews

Cheer Up, Mr. Lee has received a range of reviews from both critics and audiences. With a 6.9/10 rating on IMDb, the movie has found a decent spot in many viewers' hearts. Rotten Tomatoes features mixed reviews, with some praising its emotional depth and humor, while others cite its predictable plot as a drawback. The Korea Herald compliments Cha Seung-won's performance, stating, 'Cha Seung-won brings both heart and humor to a role that could easily have been overly sentimental.' On the other hand, The Korea Times suggests that the film relies heavily on its lead actor's charm, saying, 'Though heartwarming, the story sometimes feels formulaic and lacks originality.' Despite its mixed reviews, the film finds its strength in delivering a touching, albeit sometimes predictable, narrative that resonates with families. Metacritic hasn’t aggregated a score yet but individual critical voices echo similar sentiments—it's a film worth watching for its touching moments and strong performances, even if it doesn't break new ground.
