Synopsis

Chokeslam is a Canadian romantic comedy that takes a unique twist on wrestling culture while exploring themes of love, nostalgia, and personal growth. The film follows the life of a mild-mannered man named Corey who has been nursing a long-time crush on his high school sweetheart, the talented wrestler, Amanda. When Amanda returns to their hometown for a wrestling-themed event, Corey is faced with an opportunity to reconnect and confront his past. The film creatively blends elements of wrestling drama with heartfelt humor as Corey navigates the tension between his dreams and reality. As he grapples with his own insecurities, Corey must discover what it truly means to be brave—not just in the ring, but also in life and love. With amusing scenarios and endearing characters, Chokeslam is a light-hearted take on second chances and the possibility of rekindling lost love.

Reviews

Chokeslam received mixed reviews from critics, with an overall rating of 4.8/10 on IMDb and a disappointing 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's charm lies in its exploration of human relationships against the backdrop of the wrestling world, yet many reviewers felt it struggled with pacing and character development. For instance, The Globe and Mail commented, "The film juggled too many ideas without fully fleshing them out, leaving audiences wanting more depth." On the other hand, some viewers appreciated its humorous moments and nostalgic references, with one IMDb user noting, "It was fun to see familiar faces from childhood wrestling shows, and Amanda Crew delivered a solid performance." Metacritic reflects a similar sentiment, scoring the film at 38, which indicates generally unfavorable reviews. While some fans of the genre enjoyed the light-heartedness and quirky premise, critics argued that the storyline fell flat and lacked the emotional heft to make a lasting impact, citing a reliance on wrestling tropes without much innovation. Overall, Chokeslam provides a few laughs but leaves much to be desired in execution and depth.
