Synopsis

Dark Relic is a 2010 historical fantasy film starring James Frain set during the aftermath of the Crusades. The story follows a disillusioned knight, Ulric, who is entrusted with a sacred relic believed to hold divine power. As Ulric and his companions journey across war-torn lands, they face relentless supernatural forces determined to claim the relic for darkness. With themes of faith, redemption, and survival, the film combines elements of medieval adventure with horror, as the group battles both human enemies and otherworldly creatures in a quest to protect the relic’s mystic secrets.

Reviews

Dark Relic received mixed to negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, with an IMDb rating of 3.5/10 highlighting general disappointment. Critics often pointed to the film’s low budget and predictable plot as weaknesses. For example, some reviews described the special effects as underwhelming and noted a lack of character development. Despite this, a few reviewers appreciated the film's ambition and atmospheric attempt to blend medieval history with supernatural horror elements. The pacing was sometimes criticized for being uneven, and the screenplay for relying heavily on genre clichés. Rotten Tomatoes does not have an official critic score for Dark Relic, reflecting its limited theatrical exposure and niche appeal. However, some fans of the genre praised James Frain's committed performance and the film’s dark, moody aesthetic, suggesting it may appeal to viewers who enjoy cult and B-movie fantasy/horror hybrids. Overall, Dark Relic is seen as a flawed but occasionally intriguing entry in the medieval fantasy horror category, best suited for viewers with patience for lower-budget productions.
