Synopsis

Dead Sushi is a 2012 Japanese horror-comedy film directed by Noboru Iguchi that blends absurd humor with gore. The story follows Keiko, a young sushi chef played by Rina Takeda, who finds herself battling an unusual and terrifying enemy—zombie sushi. After a cursed sushi set comes to life and turns into killer monsters, Keiko must use her martial arts skills and culinary expertise to survive the bizarre onslaught. The film combines over-the-top special effects, martial arts action scenes, and slapstick comedy to deliver a unique, campy experience that parodies both horror and Japanese food culture.

Reviews

Dead Sushi has polarized critics, with reactions swinging between amused appreciation and dismissal. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a surprising 100% rating, reflecting its appeal to fans of niche horror-comedy and cult cinema. Reviewers praise its energetic and playful tone, with HorrorNews.net calling it "a ridiculous and wildly entertaining ride," highlighting Rina Takeda's convincing martial arts performance. Conversely, some critics find the premise too silly and the production values inconsistent. IMDb rates the film 5.7/10, showing a mixed but generally favorable audience reception. Metacritic data is unavailable, but user reviews often commend the movie's originality and humor despite acknowledging its low-budget feel and campy special effects. Overall, Dead Sushi is celebrated as a quirky cult film that embraces its eccentricity and delivers laughs and gore for genre enthusiasts, though it may not appeal to mainstream audiences.
