Synopsis

Walking Distance (original title: Distancias cortas) is a poignant Mexican drama film directed by Alejandro Guzmán Alvarez released in 2015. The story follows Ulises, a man with cerebral palsy who works as a receptionist in Guadalajara. Every day, he dreams of escaping his limited circumstances and finding true independence, yet he remains bound by his physical limitations and the overprotectiveness of his mother. As he meets new people, including a woman who becomes a significant presence in his life, Ulises embarks on a subtle journey of self-discovery and emotional growth. The film explores themes of disability, freedom, human connection, and hope, delivering an intimate, heartfelt portrayal that challenges conventional perceptions of disability and normalcy.

Reviews

Walking Distance has been met with critical acclaim, boasting a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDb score of 7.1/10, reflecting widespread appreciation for its empathetic storytelling and nuanced performances. Critics have praised the film for its authentic portrayal of disability and the quiet intensity of its narrative. The New York Times commended the lead actor for delivering a "deeply moving and authentic performance," highlighting the film's ability to offer a fresh perspective on a character rarely seen in cinema. Similarly, The Guardian praised the film's subtle direction and "tender storytelling," noting it as a "beautifully understated exploration of human resilience and connection." Some critiques noted the film's deliberate pacing may feel slow for viewers accustomed to more dynamic dramas. However, most agree this pacing complements the introspective and realistic tone, allowing the audience to better connect with Ulises' experiences. Overall, Walking Distance stands out as a thoughtful and compassionate film that provides meaningful representation and challenges stereotypes about physical disability.
