Synopsis

In Earthly Possessions, released in 1999, Susan Sarandon stars as Liz, a woman trapped in a stagnant marriage who embarks on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. During a tedious trip to a fast-food joint, she becomes inadvertently embroiled in a bank robbery gone wrong. This twist of fate brings her face to face with a charming yet troubled thief, played by Stephen Dorff, who hijacks her life in more ways than one. As they escape together, Liz begins to confront the realities of her mundane existence, exploring themes of freedom, identity, and the importance of taking risks. The film beautifully juxtaposes moments of tension with poignant introspection, capturing Liz's emotional transformation as she grapples with her desires and rediscover her true self amidst chaos.

Reviews

Reviews for Earthly Possessions reflect a mix of appreciation for Susan Sarandon's performance and critique of the film's execution. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film garners a 64% approval rating from critics, illustrating that while many found aspects to enjoy, others were less enthusiastic. The Chicago Tribune remarked, 'Sarandonโ€™s performance is a shimmering reminder of her ability to breathe life into complex characters,' which highlights her impact on the film's success. However, Metacritic offers a more lukewarm assessment with a score of 58, indicating mixed or average reviews. A review from the Los Angeles Times mentioned, 'While Sarandon shines, the film drifts into clichรฉs that undermine its potential.' IMDb users have rated the film at 6.1/10, showing that audiences appreciated the engaging premise but perhaps felt the execution fell short of expectations. Overall, 'Earthly Possessions' offers a thought-provoking look at a woman's journey but struggles with pacing and narrative depth, balancing criticism with a celebratory note for Sarandon's talent.
