Synopsis

Stupid Boy, originally titled Garçon stupide, is a 2004 Swiss drama film directed by Lionel Baier. The story follows the life of Loic, a young and reckless gay man living in the French part of Switzerland. Loic's self-destructive behavior leads him on a journey of self-discovery, as he navigates through his relationships and struggles with his own identity. The film explores themes of love, desire, and ultimately the search for acceptance and understanding in a conservative society. With a raw and honest portrayal of its protagonist, Stupid Boy offers a poignant and thought-provoking insight into the complexities of human emotions and the quest for belonging.

Reviews

Stupid Boy received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 6.2/10 on IMDb, 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 56/100 on Metacritic. Some critics praised the film for its bold and unapologetic approach to portraying the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community, with The Guardian stating 'Stupid Boy shines a light on the harsh realities faced by individuals fighting for their place in society'. However, other critics found the film to be overly bleak and lacking in depth, with Indiewire criticizing it as 'a superficial exploration of complex themes'. Despite its divisive reception, Stupid Boy remains a thought-provoking piece of cinema that challenges societal norms and shines a light on the complexities of human relationships.
