Synopsis

He Was Cool is a 2004 South Korean romantic comedy directed by Lee Hyung-min, featuring Song Seung-heon in the lead role. The film follows the story of Jin-hae, a shy and ordinary high school girl who mistakenly believes that Woo-suk, the school's charming and rebellious heartthrob, is interested in her. As misunderstandings and comedic situations ensue, the two gradually develop a heartfelt connection. The movie explores themes of youthful romance, misunderstandings, and the sweetness of first love, wrapped in a lighthearted and breezy narrative that captures the essence of teenage emotions and the awkwardness of growing up.

Reviews

He Was Cool received a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike. On IMDb, the film holds a score of 6.1/10, indicating moderate appreciation for its charming performances and relatable high school romance. While some reviewers commended Song Seung-heon's charismatic portrayal of Woo-suk and praised the chemistry between the leads, others pointed out that the plot was somewhat predictable and adhered closely to typical romantic comedy tropes. Critics from sites like AsianMoviePulse appreciated the film's light tone and nostalgic appeal but noted that it lacks depth and complexity, which may not satisfy viewers looking for a more substantial storyline. Rotten Tomatoes does not have an aggregated score, reflecting its niche appeal primarily within the Korean romantic comedy genre. Overall, He Was Cool is celebrated for its feel-good moments and nostalgic charm but critiqued for its conventional narrative and pacing.
