Synopsis

Himmatwala (2013) is a Bollywood action-comedy directed by Sajid Khan, starring Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah in lead roles. The film is a remake of the 1983 classic of the same name and follows the story of Raja, a brave and righteous man who returns to his village to confront his tyrannical father-in-law and restore justice. With its blend of melodramatic flair, colorful song-and-dance sequences, and over-the-top action, the film aims to evoke nostalgia from the original while catering to modern sensibilities. However, it mixes humor and emotion within a traditional masala movie framework, focusing on themes of courage, family honor, and love.

Reviews

Himmatwala was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. On IMDb, it holds a very low rating of 1.7/10, reflecting the widespread disappointment. Critics criticized the film's outdated humor and over-the-top performances, highlighting that it failed to recreate the charm of the original. Bollywood Hungama rated it 1/5, stating, “The film’s archaic style and lack of logic make it a tedious watch.” The Indian Express called it "an exhausting affair with forced comedy and loud music," while Rediff described it as "a caricature of 80s masala films that doesn't work in today’s times." Despite Ajay Devgn's earnest effort, many found the dialogues clichéd, the screenplay weak, and the plot predictable. The direction by Sajid Khan was also seen as lacking coherence and innovation. Even Tamannaah's performance did not manage to lift the film's reception. While some viewers appreciated its attempt at light-hearted entertainment, the consensus was that Himmatwala failed to engage or impress with its outdated storytelling and execution.
