Synopsis

โ€˜Luceโ€™ is a gripping psychological drama that explores the complexities of identity, race, and perception through the story of Luce Edgar, a charismatic and model student adopted from Ethiopia by a white American family. As Luce excels academically and athletically, he presents himself as the ideal child, but beneath the surface, a controversial essay and troubling discovery ignite suspicion and tensions among his teachers and parents. Directed by Julius Onah, the film delves into the uneasy intersections of performance, truth, and expectations within a high-stakes school environment, challenging viewers to question how far assumptions and biases can shape reality.

Reviews

โ€˜Luceโ€™ received generally favorable reviews from critics, holding a strong 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus praises the film as an intelligent and provocative exploration of race and identity, anchored by a compelling performance from Kelvin Harrison, Jr. On Metacritic, it scores 72 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. Critics particularly highlighted Harrison's captivating portrayal of Luce as a nuanced and complex character who commands attention. Variety commended the filmโ€™s ambition and the way it tackles uncomfortable societal issues through a suspenseful narrative framework. However, some critics pointed out that the filmโ€™s pacing occasionally falters and that the intense thematic material might feel slightly heavy-handed for some audiences.
