Synopsis
Mantrap, a romantic comedy directed by Victor Fleming and released in 1926, stars Clara Bow, Ernest Torrence, and Percy Marmont. The film is based on the novel 'Mantrap' by Sinclair Lewis. The story revolves around Ralph Prescott, a jaded divorce lawyer from the big city who is persuaded by his friend to take a vacation in the Canadian wilderness. There, he encounters Joe Easter, a rustic store owner, who has just returned with his new bride, Alverna, played by Clara Bow. Alverna is a lively and flirtatious flapper unhappy with the wilderness life. As she draws Prescott into a comedic whirlwind of seduction and confusion, alliances shift, and hilarity ensues, showcasing Bow’s charm and the contrast between city sophistication and rustic simplicity.

Reviews
Mantrap has received mixed to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. According to IMDb, the movie holds a respectable rating of 6.8/10. Rotten Tomatoes, though not having a critics' consensus, generally mirrors these sentiments in user evaluations. Positive reviews often highlight Clara Bow's charismatic performance and the film’s lighthearted nature. One critic noted, 'Clara Bow lights up the screen with her playful energy, making 'Mantrap' an endearing watch.' The New York Times praised the visual craftsmanship of the film, particularly the picturesque wilderness and competent direction by Victor Fleming. On the other hand, some negative critiques pointed out that the film's pacing lagged in certain parts, and the plot could feel inconsequential. A critique on Metacritic mentioned, 'While Bow is undoubtedly a magnet for the audience's gaze, the storyline meanders, trying to balance comedy with a thinly spread narrative.' Over the decades, 'Mantrap' has found its place in silent film retrospectives as a charming example of its genre, primarily due to Bow's enduring appeal.
