Synopsis

Roll Bounce is a vibrant coming-of-age comedy-drama set in the late 1970s that follows Xavier 'X' Smith and his friends as they navigate their teenage years through the colorful world of roller skating. When their favorite skating rink closes down, the crew must find a new place to skate and compete. Along the way, they face challenges, forge friendships, and express themselves under the disco ball lights. The film blends nostalgic music, energetic roller-skating scenes, and heartfelt moments to explore themes of youth, resilience, and community.

Reviews

Roll Bounce received mixed to positive reviews from critics, reflecting its charm and energetic spirit despite some predictable elements. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a moderate approval rating with praise for its nostalgic ambiance and soundtrack. Critics appreciated the film's authentic depiction of 1970s roller-skating culture and its engaging performances, particularly highlighting the chemistry among the young cast including Shad Moss. However, some noted that the storyline followed familiar coming-of-age tropes without significant innovation. Metacritic assigned it a score of 59/100, indicating mixed or average reviews. IMDb users rated Roll Bounce at 6.2/10, suggesting a moderately favorable audience reception. The New York Times described it as "a lively and heartfelt tribute to youth culture," while Variety noted its "infectious energy and nostalgic appeal," albeit with a "somewhat predictable narrative."
