Synopsis

"That Certain Feeling" is a 1956 romantic comedy starring Bob Hope as Victor Gustav, a successful Broadway producer who becomes romantically entangled with a young, enigmatic woman named Dunreath Henry, played by Eva Marie Saint. Set against the lively backdrop of New York City’s theater world, the film explores themes of love, jealousy, and the complexities of relationships in a humorous and lighthearted manner. When Victor discovers Dunreath’s unexpected connection to his friend, a famous writer, misunderstandings and comic situations ensue. The movie balances witty dialogue with classic mid-century charm, delivering a story about the unpredictable nature of attraction and the complications of mixing business with romance.

Reviews

Critically, "That Certain Feeling" received mixed to moderately positive reviews upon its release and in subsequent retrospectives. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.4/10, reflecting a generally favorable but reserved audience reception. Critics have praised Bob Hope’s charismatic performance, noting his impeccable comedic timing and the chemistry he shares with co-star Eva Marie Saint. The New York Times highlighted the film’s clever script and engaging dialogue, although some felt the plot lacked depth compared to other romantic comedies of the era. Rotten Tomatoes does not have a contemporary aggregated score for the film, which is common for many mid-century classics lacking a wide modern reassessment. However, film historians often appreciate the movie for its classic 1950s Hollywood production values and light entertainment value. On the downside, some reviews point out that the storyline feels predictable and occasionally formulaic, which might not satisfy viewers seeking a more substantial narrative. Overall, "That Certain Feeling" is regarded as an enjoyable period piece that showcases Bob Hope’s comedic strengths within a familiar romantic comedy framework.
