Synopsis

In 'The Visit,' directed by M. Night Shyamalan, siblings Becca and Tyler embark on a journey to meet their estranged grandparents for the first time. The children are eager to experience a week of fun and adventure at the rural Pennsylvania farmhouse, which they hope will help mend their family's fractured history. However, as the days unfold, Becca and Tyler soon discover that their grandparents are not what they seem. Disturbing and odd behaviors, coupled with eerie bedtime rituals, lead the siblings to realize that their visit may turn out to be more terrifying than they ever imagined. This chilling blend of horror and humor explores themes of family dynamics, trust, and the daunting challenge of reconciling the past. As night falls, the once cozy farmhouse transforms into a setting for a gripping psychological thriller, revealing the dark secrets hidden within.

Reviews

Critics have responded to The Visit with a mix of mild praise and reservations. With a score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has been recognized for its unique blend of comedy and horror. The Verge noted, "Shyamalan brings back his knack for suspense and cleverly intersperses humor throughout the chilling narrative." Reviewers have praised the performances of the young actors, with The Playlist highlighting Becca and Tyler's chemistry, stating they are "at the heart of the film's emotional core." However, some criticism arises regarding the film's pacing and specific plot points. IndieWire expressed that while the film captures a gripping first half, the ending might feel somewhat predictable. "The Visit is firmly in the realm of modern horror but has Shyamalanโ€™s signature twist that many audiences might see coming," they commented. Overall, while not flawless, the film has provided solid entertainment and a fresh take on the found-footage genre, showcasing the director's return to form.
