Synopsis

The Wind in the Willows: The Musical (2017) brings Kenneth Grahame’s beloved tale to vibrant life in a full-length musical adaptation. When humble Mole (Henry Blyth) ventures aboveground, he meets the witty and water-loving Ratty (Matt Rixon), who introduces him to a world of riverbank revelry. Their peaceful idyll is shadowed by the return of the impulsive, motor-mad Toad (Rufus Hound), freshly released from prison and itching for new escapades. Encouraged by his loyal friends—along with the dignified butler-like Badger (Mark Gatiss)—Toad embarks on a whirlwind journey that includes daring escapes, hideouts in the Wild Wood, and a skirmish with a gang of greedy weasels. Overflowing with catchy songs, colorful choreography, and sumptuous sets, this ITV special celebrates the power of friendship, loyalty, and home in over a century–old countryside classic.

Reviews

IMDb: 7.4/10 – On IMDb, audience members applaud Rufus Hound’s energetic take on Toad, one user calling it “an absolute delight for kids and grown-ups alike.” Another viewer noted, “The songs are infectious, though the second act drags a little.” Rotten Tomatoes currently lacks an official critic Tomatometer score, but its audience rating stands at 88%, reflecting solid family-film approval. The Guardian (Lucy Mangan) awarded it 3 out of 5 stars, praising the “sumptuous period design and heartfelt performances” but observing that “the running time could have been trimmed to maintain momentum.” The Telegraph gave it 3/5 as well, dubbing it “a spirited romp that perfectly captures Grahame’s gentle humour,” while cautioning that “some sequences meander when they ought to gallop.” On Metacritic, no aggregate score is available, though individual user reviews echo similar sentiments: high marks for production values and cast chemistry, tempered by minor pacing criticisms. Altogether, critics and viewers agree The Wind in the Willows: The Musical is a charming, family-friendly adaptation—colorful and tuneful, even if it occasionally overstays its welcome.
