Synopsis

In Tora-san Goes North, the 23rd installment of the beloved 'Otoko wa Tsurai yo' series, our hapless hero Torajiro 'Tora-san' Kuruma (Kiyoshi Atsumi) embarks on a journey to Hokkaido after his sister Sakura's (Chieko Baisho) friend visits. Tora seeks to relieve the monotony of his life as a traveling salesman, wandering through picturesque landscapes and charming towns. During his adventures, he encounters a variety of colorful characters and fleeting romances, yet remains perpetually unlucky in love. The film captures the stunning vistas of northern Japan while exploring themes of familial bonds, longing, and the pursuit of dreams. A bittersweet comedy-drama, the movie delicately balances humor with poignant moments as Tora confronts both the joys and sorrows of life on the road. As always, his charm and naivety elicit both laughter and sympathy from viewers as they accompany him on his misadventures amidst the backdrop of Hokkaido's natural beauty.

Reviews

Tora-san Goes North has been well-received by audiences, earning a respectable IMDb rating of 7.0/10. Critics commend the film's ability to blend humor and heartfelt storytelling, making it another delightful addition to the Tora-san franchise. The Japan Times notes, 'Kiyoshi Atsumi's portrayal of Tora is as endearing as ever, navigating the heart and humor with effortless charm.' This installment is appreciated for its scenic depictions of Hokkaido, providing a visually stunning backdrop that complements Tora's escapades. However, some viewers may find the formulaic nature of the plot predictable. According to Rotten Tomatoes, fans of the series will enjoy the familiar themes of unrequited love and family dynamics, but newcomers might feel somewhat adrift without the context of previous films. Still, the emotional depth and comedic moments resonate strongly, making it a must-watch for die-hard fans. Overall, Tora-san Goes North successfully captures the essence of the character and the spirit of adventure that defines the beloved franchise.
