Synopsis

Trolland, a 2016 horror film directed by Cody Calahan and featuring Jerry O'Connell, delves into the terrifying experiences of four women led by a pragmatic tour guide into Canada's remote wilderness. The group embarks on a trip to shoot a music video but instead becomes the prey of monstrous creatures known as trolls. As they struggle to survive the dark, eerie forest inhabited by these mythical beasts, their friendships and sanity are pushed to the brink. The film combines elements of mythology, survival horror, and thriller genres, offering viewers a grim and suspenseful tale set against a starkly atmospheric backdrop.

Reviews

Trolland has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from both critics and audiences. On IMDb, it holds a notably low rating of 1.2/10, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction. Many reviewers have criticized the film for its poor production values, weak script, and lack of genuine scares. For instance, Rotten Tomatoes does not currently list a critic score, indicating minimal critical attention and a lack of acclaim. Metacritic also does not have a rating, highlighting the filmโ€™s limited impact on mainstream critics. Common points of critique include subpar acting, especially from the leads, and a storyline that fails to develop its horror premise effectively. Despite its intriguing folklore concept, reviewers have described Trolland as failing to deliver tension or excitement, often labeling it tedious and predictable. The special effects and creature design have been cited as unimpressive, which further diminishes the filmโ€™s appeal to horror fans. However, a small segment of viewers appreciates the attempt to incorporate Canadian folklore and found the remote setting atmospheric, though these positives are not enough to redeem the overall viewing experience.
