Synopsis
In the 1999 sci-fi horror film 'Virus,' directed by John Bruno, a salvage crew aboard the tugboat Sea Star stumbles upon a seemingly abandoned Russian research vessel adrift in the South Pacific. Led by the formidable Captain Everton (Donald Sutherland), the crew, including Chief Engineer Steve Baker (William Baldwin) and navigator Kelly Foster (Jamie Lee Curtis), soon realize that the ship is not as deserted as it appears. They uncover a terrifying alien life form that has taken control of the vessel's electronics and machinery. This malevolent entity seeks to eradicate all human life on board, converting the ship into a deadly bio-mechanical fortress. The crew must battle against this insidious threat while trying to survive and escape from the clutches of a monstrous alien intelligence bent on assimilation and destruction. 'Virus' explores themes of survival and the relentless struggle between human ingenuity and alien technology.

Reviews
Despite its intriguing premise, 'Virus' received largely negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a dismal approval rating of 12%, reflecting a general consensus of disappointment. Reviewers criticized the film's lackluster execution, with The New York Times noting that it 'borrows heavily from superior sci-fi and horror films but fails to leave its own mark.' The film's reliance on special effects over strong storytelling and character development was a common point of criticism. Metacritic gave 'Virus' an exceptionally low score of 19 out of 100, indicating 'overwhelming dislike.' Audience response was similarly lukewarm, with IMDb users giving it a modest rating of 5.0 out of 10. Entertainment Weekly gave the film a C-, pointing out that 'the impressive visual effects couldn't make up for the shallow plot and uninspired performances.' However, some viewers appreciated the chilling atmosphere and the film's attempt at blending the sci-fi and horror genres. While 'Virus' did have moments of tension and creative design, it ultimately fell short of becoming the memorable thriller it aspired to be.
