Synopsis

"Long Live Freedom" (original title: "Viva la libertà") is a 2013 Italian political drama directed by Roberto Andò, starring Toni Servillo in dual roles. The film explores the life of Enrico Oliveri, a disillusioned and burned-out left-wing politician grappling with the pressures of his office. When he mysteriously disappears just before an important election, his identical twin brother, who leads a bohemian and existentially free lifestyle, is asked to impersonate him. The story unfolds as this unconventional substitution challenges the world of politics, revealing the profound divide between personal freedom and public responsibilities, and ultimately probing the nature of identity, authenticity, and political idealism.

Reviews

"Long Live Freedom" has garnered mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike. On IMDb, it holds a moderate rating of 6.9/10, reflecting generally favorable but subdued responses. Rotten Tomatoes rates the film at 44% based on mixed reviews, indicating critical division, while Metacritic’s score stands at 42/100, showing mixed or average reviews. Critics praised Toni Servillo's captivating dual performance, with Variety highlighting his "remarkable ability to portray two contrasting characters with depth and subtlety." The New York Times appreciated the film's thought-provoking premise, noting that "the narrative cleverly contrasts political cynicism with genuine human emotion." However, some reviewers found the pacing uneven and the plot overly metaphorical, with The Guardian remarking that "the film struggles to balance its political commentary with a convincing narrative arc." Overall, "Long Live Freedom" is seen as an intellectually engaging piece with standout performances but may challenge viewers seeking dynamic political thrillers.
