Reviews

Krakatoa, East of Java garnered mixed reviews upon release. Critics praised the film's visual effects and cinematography for its depiction of the catastrophic eruption but criticized the historical inaccuracies and lack of character development. The Hollywood Reporter mentioned, 'Visually stunning with a sense of impending doom, Krakatoa, East of Java lacks depth in storytelling.' However, the film was noted for its ambitious scale and ambitious recreation of the volcanic disaster. Variety magazine added, 'The film's grandeur is undermined by a lack of emotional connection with the characters.' Overall, the performances, especially Maximilian Schell's, were considered commendable but overshadowed by the film's technical achievements. IMDb rating of 5.4/10 and Rotten Tomatoes score of 0% reflect the polarizing opinions amongst viewers and critics.
