W.E. is a romantic drama film directed by Madonna, which follows the parallel stories of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee for whom King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne, and Wally Winthrop, a lonely New Yorker who becomes obsessed with Simpson's story. The film intertwines past and present as Wally immerses herself in the auction of the Windsor Estate items, reflecting on the tumultuous love affair that captivated the world in the 1930s. Reviews
W.E. has received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its visuals and costumes but criticism for its disjointed narrative. A review from Metacritic states, 'W.E. showcases Madonna's visual flair but falls short in terms of storytelling, resulting in a glossy yet ultimately unsatisfying film.' Rotten Tomatoes rates the film at a low 12% based on critics' consensus, suggesting that the film struggles to balance its dual storylines effectively. Despite these criticisms, some reviewers appreciate Abbie Cornish's performance as Wally Winthrop and the film's historical aesthetics. IMDb users have given W.E. a more favorable rating of 6.2/10, indicating a somewhat polarizing reception among audiences and critics.
