Synopsis

Based on Chetan Bhagat's best-selling novel, 2 States is a romantic comedy-drama that explores the complexities of inter-cultural marriage. The film follows the love story of Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt), who come from two distinct cultural backgrounds: Punjabi and Tamil. Their journey begins at IIM Ahmedabad, where they meet and eventually fall in love. However, their relationship faces a major hurdle: convincing their traditional families to accept their union. As they navigate the challenges of love that transcends cultural divides, Krish and Ananya must confront familial expectations, societal norms, and their own insecurities. The film beautifully depicts the emotional turmoil and comedic situations that arise as they attempt to bridge their differences while promoting love and acceptance amidst family traditions.

Reviews

"2 States' has garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.9/10, indicating a fair level of appreciation among viewers, while Rotten Tomatoes scores it lower at 36%, suggesting that many critics were less impressed. According to a review from Times of India, the film is a "charming tale of love and cultural friction," highlighting the chemistry between the lead actors and the comedic moments that resonate well with the audience. Conversely, some critics noted that the film, while entertaining, often relied on clichés and predictable story arcs. The Hindustan Times commented, "The film's strength lies in its relatable characters and light-hearted narrative, yet it falters when attempting to delve deeper into the societal issues it raises." Despite its flaws, many viewers found themselves immersed in the film’s light-hearted tone and romantic escapades. It is a decent adaptation of Bhagat’s novel, capable of entertaining those who have a penchant for rom-coms, but may not satisfy the most discerning film critics.
