Synopsis

"Cat and Mouse" is a 2003 Hong Kong action thriller directed by Gordon Chan, starring Andy Lau in a dual role. The film is an adaptation of the nineteenth-century Chinese classical novel "The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants" and follows the story of Detective Zhan Zhao, portrayed by Andy Lau, who is tasked with bringing down the notorious bandit, the Mouse, while navigating complex loyalties and a dangerous underworld. Blending elements of martial arts, suspense, and drama, the movie explores themes of justice, betrayal, and honor as the characters engage in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Featuring intense fight sequences and a rich period setting, the film combines traditional storytelling with modern cinematic techniques.

Reviews

"Cat and Mouse" received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.2/10, indicating a lukewarm reception. Critics acknowledged Andy Lau's strong performance, especially his ability to portray two distinct characters convincingly, which provided the film with its emotional core. The action sequences were generally praised for their choreography and energy. However, some reviewers criticized the film's pacing and convoluted plot which some found difficult to follow. Rotten Tomatoes does not have an aggregated score for this title, reflecting its niche appeal and limited international exposure. According to some Hong Kong cinema critics, while the movie offered stylish visuals and impressive stunts, it failed to capture the full depth of the source material, leading to a less impactful narrative. Fans of the genre might appreciate the film’s homage to classic wuxia elements, but casual viewers may find it somewhat uneven or overstuffed.
