While some praised its entertaining action sequences and Kurt Russell's charismatic performance as Snake Plissken, others criticized its campy dialogue and lackluster special effects. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating of 54%, with the consensus stating 'Kurt Russell continues to make a charismatic anti-hero, but the film itself lacks the originality and excitement of its predecessor.' IMDb rated the movie 5.7/10, with many users appreciating its nostalgic value and over-the-top 90s aesthetic. Metacritic also gave it a score of 54/100, highlighting the film's shortcomings in comparison to its predecessor.
